sugary sweet (like these donuts) || Steve & Matt
For a long time, especially after the Great Defrosting of 2012, Steve felt rather self-conscious about being himself. Apparently, since the time he went down into the ice and being found in the 21st century, people had put Captain America so high up on a pedestal that Steve couldn’t even see the ground anymore. People came up to Steve with stars in their eyes, and he didn’t know how to tell them that this American idol that they grew up with was just a kid from Brooklyn that was just now learning how to work Google. He saw the difference between the idealistic Captain America and himself; Cap would shit red, white, and blue flags while Steve would be content to criticize the country for how far they’ve fallen. Cap would be stuck in the 40s, Steve would acclimatize and learn to love emojis and social media apps. Cap would be constantly so serious and such a stickler for the rules, Steve would play pranks on others and test the limits of the law.
The one thing that Cap and Steve would always have in common, however, is the fact that they would always stand up for the little guys, regardless of where they came from.
One of the first things Steve got caught up to speed on was the mutant revolution. And to find that people still discriminated against mutants was a shame, especially when the public was willing to praise enhanced humans like himself to no end. When he heard that there was a law firm right there in Manhattan that supported mutants, or at least willing to pick up mutant discrimination cases, he wanted to meet the lawyers fighting these cases. He wanted to show his support in any way he could. He picked up a box of donuts from Esther’s (because she always knew how to make ‘em) before heading over to the Daily Bugle building. He found the listing for Nelson and Murdock and headed to their offices.
He smiled and waved politely to the people who acknowledged him. It wasn’t exactly a rare thing to see him in the building but it wasn’t such a common sight either. He stepped into the office, peering around a bit. “Hi, I’m looking for Matt Murdock?” He said when he was caught looking a little lost.
