Story - summarized

Nikki and Momo are shopping for Halloween when Nikki starts showing signs of sickness. Worried, Momo rushes her to the nearest hospital. It turns out that Nikki is fine but needs more rest - Momo, however, is the one with a fever.

He protests being sick, not wanting to take any medicine. To his surprise, a familiar nurse named Moe walks in. She calms him down and treats him well. Momo then tells Nikki that they both should stay in the hospital until they're both better.

Momo wanders the halls until he spots another nurse watching a spooky news story on TV: there are mysterious footsteps in the hospital at midnight, and it's rumored that this is a ghost that causes bad luck. He doesn't believe it - until that night, when he and Nikki were looking over Halloween games and brochures.

The footsteps made their way down the hall, slow and lumbering. But when they check the hall, no one is there. Both of them worry that the nurses or patients could be in danger.

Nikki and Momo decide to spring a trap for the mysterious figure the next time they hear the noise. He grabs a syringe, Nikki a quilt, and they ambush the figure - who turns out to be Mayor Rodel. He was coming to visit Moe since she only works at night... and they're secretly engaged.

Afterwards, Momo and Nikki enjoy candy in their hospital room.

Connections

-You first meet Mayor Rodel in Vol. 1 Chapter 3. He gives the whole group a bumpy ride in his car.

-Also in Vol. 1 Ch. 3, during the 3-12 episode, Nikki and friends gather to see Rodel after he recovered from Vulture's brainwashing. He told them he was going to stick around and get some extra tests done, "just in case." As soon as the nurse (Moe) comes in, he pretends to be hurt so he can be around her longer.

Fun Facts

-Bento boxes are Japanese in origin.

-Despite having his own character art in the game, Rodel only appears as a voice in this Reflection.

-This is one of two doctor suits in the game, the only other one being Joy's suit from Perfect Experiment.

Story - summarized

Marina would love to learn some real magic, especially being so close to Halloween. So, she wriggles her way into a magic school in Shadowflow. After too long searching, she finds it in a back alley.

Everyone is dressed like wizards and trying to learn magic. Marina soon makes friends with another student, Cersei, who is from Ninir. The two of them notice that the "magic" here is just elaborate technical tricks, nothing more than sensors and devices. So, they team up to bring the scammer down.

In no time at all, Marina has pulled off enough fancy tricks to be recognized by the school's founder. He invites her in, but before he can say much, she reveals that she knows he is a fraud. He offers her a share of the extorted money and a position on the staff.

What the founder doesn't know, is that Marina plans to use this new position to grab all his information and pass it along to Cersei. To complete the scheme, Marina invites the founder to one of her classes.

She casts a spell said to summon ghosts - the police show up instead. Cersei called them during class. The founder tries to throw the blame onto others in the room, then tries to jump out the window, then finally gets caught and arrested.

Back on the Ark, Marina finds Aeon opening a few boxes of candy and goodies from Shadowflow. He asks her what happened, and she launches into a recap of the last week.

Connections

-Marina and Cersei meet at the Dorm of the Strange in Vol. 2, Chapter 3. Marina is amazed by all the unique people there and decides she wants to go to college if it means hanging out with the "fun people."

-Lots of strange things seem to happen around Shadowflow. First, everyone gets mind-controlled by Vulture in Vol. 1 Ch. 3, then Momo has to catch a ghost in a hospital in Sweet Treatment, and now Marina needs to uncover a magical scam.

Fun Facts

-When you read Chapter 2, the last few strings of dialogue repeat ad nauseam. The only way to get out is to leave the chapter manually.

-This isn't the only Reflection with "broken" dialogue: Marina's Doodle Game and Lilith's Abyss of Stars both feature never-ending loops of text.

-Cats (especially black cats) have long been associated with magic: from the Greek goddess Hecate, to the Egyptian goddess Bastet, to the medieval superstition that black cats were disguised witches.

Did anyone else notice in the new Floral Dream event that none of the Pigeon citizens or clergy ever blamed King Augustus? They only put the blame for the relationship on Lady Laure. Another reason why Mercury hates the Elves of Light so much.

Nikki forgets that the play she is performing in starts only two weeks away. You and Momo assure Nikki that you both will help her practice. Momo narrates, Nikki plays the lead, and you play the supporting characters.

When Nikki’s character finds a heavenly garden, you act as the garden’s Admin, forbidding her from taking the magic flowers. Nikki begs for one flower to save her friend, Flar, from a curse. Nikki is supposed to cry here... but Momo says she looks like someone stole her clothes.

At the theater, the cast rehearses the play. Even the director points out that Nikki isn’t getting into the character’s emotions. You comfort Nikki and suggest that she pretend she was talking to a real friend. She thinks of you, and she is able to cry.

Momo hands her a bouquet of hyacinths that he got for her, and they inspire Nikki to make the costume. On the night of the performance, Nikki cries as she plucks the hyacinth from the garden. Everyone is stunned by her emotion. The play is a success.

Nikki asks where Momo bought the hyacinths, but he plucked them from a field just outside of town. He leads her there - she takes in the flowers blowing in the breeze, the birds in the sky. Everything is beautiful and serene. And with you and Momo here, it is perfect.

Connections

-This is the first play Nikki performs in the game. Later, she joins December Troupe starting with Flower and Jenny.

-In the play, Nikki’s “friend,” Flar, is a half-human, half-elf who gets cursed because of her background. Racism towards human-elf children is common in Miraland, from Mercury to Bane, a character from the Reflection for Snowy Song.

-A lot of actors can’t cry on demand, so they resort to method acting, like Nikki. They put themselves in as close of a situation as their character so they can use their own emotions to portray the character.

-In the global server, the flower’s name is translated to “hyacinth.” This most likely refers to the “hyacinth orchid,” common in China.

-In the cultural language of flowers, hyacinths represent elegance and beauty in China. It’s associated with spring and is often given to friends. In the Western World, the hyacinth is a separate flower, and while its general meaning is constancy, the purple-colored hyacinths like in the Reflection represent sorrow and respect.
