#365daysofbiking Eccentricities:

December 23rd - It’s now traditional for me to have a day out somewhere different before Christmas. Today I visited Ashbourne, a place I’ve passed through lots but rarely stopped and studied.

The architecture and frantic air of business was fantastic, but what I really liked was the small, eccentric details: St Oswald’s Church with the afterthought clock and gothic gateposts with the skull detail. The Art Nouveaux staircase in the entry to an outdoor shop.

This little, but very dense valley town is utterly gorgeous. I must return at a more relaxed time.

Oh, and the cycling content? I test rode a new bike while I was here. Wel, a couple actually but that’s another story...

St Oswald's Church Horton-in-Ribbledale by Adam Swaine Via Flickr: This ancient church built in the early 12th Century stands in the shadow of Penyghent, one of the Three Peaks. The building has many interesting features unique in the Dales, particularly the Norman doorway and tub font with herringbone decoration. The church is open each day History of the Village Horton in Ribblesdale was historically a part of Ewcross wapentake in the West Riding of Yorkshire. It became a parish town in the early 12th century when the church of St. Oswald was established. This church was historically associated with the Deanery of Chester, and was part of the Diocese of York - though, today it is part of the Diocese of Bradford. The surviving parish records date back to 1556. In the 13th century the village and parish were ruled by rival monastic orders at Jervaulx Abbey and Fountains Abbey. Their dispute stemmed from a 1220 transfer of property here by William de Mowbray to the Fountains monks, which challenged the primacy of an earlier grant by Henry III to Jervaulx's predecessors at Fors Abbey. Not until 1315 was this dispute firmly settled, when Edward II confirmed the Abbot of Jervaulx as Lord of Horton in Ribblesdale

St Oswald's Hospice is a fantastic charity. They provide wonderful care for so many people who go through some of the hardest moments of their life. I want to promote them here. I've volunteered for them before and the people who work for this organisation are amazing as are those that they support. Donate if you can, spread the word if you want.

About Us

St Oswald's provides specialist care for local adults, young people and children.

We are situated in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne and our purpose-built facilities offer a range of flexible services to North East families.

Within our adult service, we offer a day hospice, lymphoedema service, an inpatient unit, complementary therapy service, consultant outpatient clinic and an outreach service.

Adults with life limiting conditions are referred to us for pain and symptom management and end of life care. We care for patients with Cancer, as well as those with end stage neurological, cardiac and respiratory conditions.

Within our Children's Service, we offer specialist short breaks to children with life limiting conditions and their families. Children from 0 - 18 can benefit from our care at St Oswald's. Within the last few months, we've also begun developing a pilot service for young adults, aged 18-25, to enable us to continue to support children in our care who are reaching adulthood and perhaps those who have already left the service

Our multi-disciplinary team at St Oswald's includes doctors, nurses, physios, occupational therapists, social workers, chaplain support and complementary therapists.

We are a registered charity. Our annual running costs amount to £8.5 million – of which £6.5 million must be raised through voluntary giving.

We make no charge for any of our services, ensuring hospice care is available to everyone.
