The college I went to always makes a big deal out of St. Pat’s. It’s a primarily engineering school, and St. Patrick was the patron saint of engineering. Thus, a huge tradition was born some 109 years ago. There’s an organization called the St. Pat’s Board that is responsible for planning the year’s theme, parade, coronation, and competition. It’s a lot like Greek Week, but non-Greeks participate, too. Every year has a sweatshirt design, and everyone buys them and wears them all the time. Most organizations make a design for the back of the sweatshirt, as you can see from my sorority years. People come from all over the state to be part of the celebrations, and way more alumni come back for Pat’s than for homecoming. (In fact, my sorority sister who lives in Alaska is there right now, and I’m missing out on seeing her.) St. Pat’s lasts like ten days at my school, and we even had two days off class for it every year. It’s weird after all that to be around people who only celebrate St. Patrick’s Day a normal amount.
