Why Stæbek is Good for Bradley

On January 2nd it was reported that Bob Bradley, former United States Men National Soccer team coach, is now the coach at Norwegian Tippeligaen side Stabæk. This was made official yesterday, but I had heard rumors of it back in December. Those rumors were then followed by comments that Bradley should not take the job in Norway because he should be in a 'better league'. Those commenters would postulate Bradley going to a Championship side in England where he would supposedly have a better chance of coaching an even better side in Europe (a la the Premier League). I don't agree with those statements because a second division side in England does not mean that he will get better jobs elsewhere in Europe. Obviously the same holds true for Stabæk, but being in a top league in a European country gives him a better chance to play other European clubs and hopefully be able to show what he's worth.

Though I do agree that Bradley should not have applied for any of the open positions in the MLS, but I do not think that Stabæk is a bad decision. Having just been promoted and not too long ago was playing in Europe, Stabæk is a great way to begin Bradley's coaching career in European soccer. This is a better testing ground in club soccer for Bradley then coming back to the MLS. He needs to be able to move on and upwards in the coaching world. Also, Bradley stated that an opportunity in Europe would be a good one. Stabæk is in Europe and he is a coach without a job. So, there were things already on the table to open discussions.

European soccer, no matter where at in Europe, is still European soccer. I understand that there are some leagues that are more desirable than others (The Premier League, La Liga, etc.), but I think that having not coached before in Europe and his only non-American coaching experience was with Egypt (not to be downplayed) I think that amount of clubs interested in Bradley would be slim. Americans are still not highly thought of when it comes to soccer. This is a step in the right direction.

No matter if you think this is the wrong move for Bradley this is a great opportunity for him. He is paving the way for future American coaches in Europe. Hopefully this season will be one to remember and in 2015 we will see Stabæk in the qualifying rounds of the Champions league!
