Fic authors self-rec! When you get this, reply with your favourite five fics that you’ve written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Yay!
I wasn’t tagged by anybody, I just felt like doing this to kind of... boost my confidence levels I guess? I tend to talk shit about my writing ability but I’m trying to get better about not doing that and celebrate my skills. I am tagging @dracyoola and @trainsforbrains because they’re basically the only people who read my fics, and @gamerzylo just because.
None of these are posted online, just sayin’. I also apologize for my naming system because titles are hard and most of these are just named something vague to help me remember what it was about later. Also, essentially all one-shots because I don’t know how to write long things apparently.
Beware, I write a lot of shit about my Dragon Age OC. I love my stabby elf boy.
1. Nut Up or Shut Up (SHINee) - Basically it was the boys in a zombie apocalypse. I wrote it nearly a decade ago and for the longest time it was the longest one-shot I’d ever written (at 8337 words; that record has since been beaten). I don’t know, it was just something so different from anything I’d written before and I haven’t really written anything zombie-related since, so this one always sticks out for me. Even if my writing might have slightly improved in the meantime.
2. fucking flower tree (Dragon Age) - a Hanahaki disease fic because I just wanted to see if I could do it. My Inquisitor (Zaene) falls in love with Dorian but Dorian is already in love with Zaene’s best friend, Avi. Sad times ensue. I wrote this during a period of time where everything I wanted to write was depressing and angsty. It kinda helped me work through some stuff.
3. meeting the bestie, now in space! (Dragon Age/Mass Effect) - I once wrote a fic about how Zaene first met Avi and they became friends. I then rewrote it as if they were in the Mass Effect universe, changing their races and some of their class-based abilities but keeping most of the important details the same. This is that rewrite. It was just a fun experiment and the first time I ever tried writing anything Mass Effect-related, and I loved turning Zaene from a shit-talking elf into a shit-talking salarian.
4. the one where the thing happens (Dragon Age) - Hoo boy. Without going into a lot of details necessary to understand where this fits in my universe’s timeline, let’s just say this is probably the most brutal revenge story I’ve ever had the pleasure of writing. I got into a discussion once about what would turn a hero into a villain, and, after some thought and further discussion, this was the result of it. This is the culmination of a series of events that, in an alternate timeline, would lead Zaene to become the villain. This is the first thing I can remember writing where I ever got seriously violent and evil with it. It was fun.
5. tent sharing (Dragon Age) - What started off as just a niggling little one-shot idea in the back of my head while I was writing for Nano in 2017 turned into a gigantic, 20k-word monster that completely ran away with me. While the basic concept at the beginning was just “two people that hate each other are forced to share a tent because reasons”, it ultimately ended up being a not-quite-love story between Zaene and Solas. It was the first time I felt like I managed to write a decent sex scene in a story, ever. This also now holds the current record for longest thing I’ve ever written.
Bonus extras, because I couldn’t narrow it down to just five!
6. Butterfly (Multi-fandom) - I turned SHINee into vampires and had a lot of Dark and Dramatic(TM) things happen. Various other Kpop groups had cameos. This is the only chaptered fic on this list. I started writing it almost 8 years ago and then stopped after a year and never finished it. It’s still good stuff, and some of the best writing I did up to that point, but I just got tired of it. One day I’ll probably go back and finish it. Maybe.
7. Nightmare (Dragon Age) - I did this thing where it asks you a bunch of darker questions to help flesh out your OCs and stuff. One was to ‘describe their worst nightmare’. So I answered that for Zaene in the form of a tiny ficlet. And I mean tiny. It’s less than 600 words. But it’s something I feel really proud of because nightmares and dream sequences can be really hard to capture in words.
