Mini-Review #1
Eric King EP (2016) by Eric King
(listen along)
Today I’m doing something a little different and reviewing some indie hip hop. This 4-song EP is Eric King’s first, and it shows potential. Something that stood out to me while listening was the fusion of styles in the songs. Instead of stock hip hop beats, King opts for electronic accompaniment. In all honesty, I would like to hear more sampling and toying with elements of electronic music in future releases, because that’s what set his songs apart for me. Committing more to that idea helps fill a niche that I don’t think many hip hop artists go for, so we’ll have to see where King goes from here. King’s rapping is my favorite part of these songs, and his voice carries a lot of passion in it that you don’t hear in many other indie artists. Favorite song among these four is Lift Me Out Of The Dark And Into The Light. This is a bold EP, and I think Eric King shows that he’s taking this seriously. King’s style has a bunch of different ways it could grow to from here, but as a first musical offering it’s got a lot to show. Looking forward to future releases to see how he grows as a musician.
