Controlling center stage is crucial in every aspect of the game. While dash dancing, make a strong effort to not give up too much space, lest you set yourself up to be cornered with few options.
Conversely, if your opponent is cornered, you have very little reason to approach. They have to find a way to get back to where they aren't at a disadvantage. React to whatever they do and keep them cornered/set up for an edgeguard situation. This can be tricky against certain characters with quick platform movement, so stay on guard and don't fret if they manage to get past you. Instead, think about what they did and how you can cover it next time.
