Staging to Sell: De-Personalize
When you are selling your house, you want potential buyers to picture themselves living their lives in your house. Part of making this magic happen is de-personalizing your home. Think of it this way - the day you listed your house for sale was they day it was no longer your home. As hard as it may be to pack away the pictures of your family through the years, your efforts really do help market your house and even sell if faster.
Make it Everyone’s Home
Here are some of my best tips for de-personalizing your home and making it a space anyone can see themselves moving into.
* Family Pictures - Pack up the majority of wall and counter pictures of family, vacations, and Fido. Their temporary absence will make them that much more enjoyable when you unpack them in your new house.
* Collections - The porcelain clowns that you have been collecting for years should also be packed away along with the display case. You can leave a small sample of your collection on a shelf or table, just make it organized and uncluttered.
* Toys - I would never suggest packing away all your kid’s toys until move-in day, but do recommend confining them to a few organized areas of the house. Use large baskets with lids or hampers to stow toys during showings.
If you are still not sold on these tips, let me take you to preview some well- and poorly-staged homes. Seen from a buyer’s perspective, I think you’ll easily appreciate the benefits.
