Fusing jazz, pop and soul, Spencer Day is a red hot crooner with a fiercely impassioned and intelligent hybrid vibe. Day’s emergence on the Billboard jazz charts with his 2009 Concord Records debut, Vagabond, reflects the widening interpretation of the genre. For ten years, Day has wooed audiences around the world at venues as diverse as Birdland in New York, the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Jazz Alley in Seattle, the Pacific Rim Jazz Festival in Manila, the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, Tanglewood Music Center in Boston, and on national television on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. His number one hit, “Till You Come to Me,” remained on the Billboard Jazz Charts for 47 weeks.
Spencer Day in Concert will feature a sneak preview of new music from his upcoming release, Angel City. The suspense is high! For Daybreak, his last album which debuted #1 on the iTunes Jazz Chart, he crafted new works that reflect Day’s roots in the Great American Songbook, with a contemporary, upbeat twist that has become his signature sound. As George W. Harris of Jazz Weekly wrote, “Day exudes charm, class and coolness in a way I thought was lost on this present generation.”
Day’s versatility and love for his audience allows him to feel comfortable in a small jazz venue or in the expansive spaces of the Hollywood Bowl. As he puts it, “As I grow as a musician, I hope to continue paying homage to the great artists who have shaped my style and sensibilities. I want to create music that is smooth and sophisticated but teeming with raw emotion and fire under the surface. It is in life’s contradictions where the most beautiful things are created.”
Day’s charitable activities include performances on behalf of Catholic Charities’ support for HIV/AIDS, the Horizons Foundation, a community-based LGBT philanthropic organization, the children’s health charity ONEXONE, and the Human Rights Campaign’s Salt Lake City fund-raising dinner. On June 30, 2010, he rang NASDAQ’s closing bell in recognition of his donation of earnings from downloads of his single, “Better Way,” to Feeding America.
