On 16th March Heather Gilderdale Scott gave a lecture at St Albans Cathedral about the stained glass that was excavated 25 years ago from the site of the old Chapter House. Researchers have been examining fragments of glass to try to establish what the windows in the Chapter House may have looked like. Due to the age of the fragments (the windows were thought to be torn down during the dissolution of the monasteries) limited evidence is available to assist the enquiry. Researchers have concluded that the images on the windows were most likely to have depicted either the story of Revelation (a popular theme of the time, with relevant imagery included in the fragments such as claws, hair, foliage) or the story of Saint Alban (a popular theme, relevant to the site). An eye on a 'clean shaven cheek' with a mark resembling a tear may have related to a common illustration of Saint Alban. Heather was extremely knowledgable and showed great respect to the artefacts. However it struck me that her work was rather precarious, as it is really anyone's guess as to how the windows would have looked, and even how the building looked as there are no records that record its image. There's something unique about the mystery of not knowing the answer. Current history is recorded with nauseating detail- all facts, relevant, irrelevant, true and untrue are recorded and reproduced through multiple media and countless images. The fragments of the Chapter house windows can reconfigure in the imagination alone, perhaps the safest place for them to be.
