#usstamps - Commemorative Series of 1948. George Washington Carver Memorial. A corner plate block of four 3-cents stamps. Born a slave in the early 1860s, the boy did not so much as have a name, and never knew his parents, who were bound to different plantations in SW Missouri. Before he was 6 months old, night raiders swooped down and carried him off with his mother and other slaves. He went unfed, caught whooping cough and was dying when agents from the owners came to buy back the black cargo. The sickly boy was raised by the Carvers, and from them took his name. “George Washington” was added in praise of his honesty and industry. #philately #philatelic #stamps #stampcollections #ushistory #georgewashingtoncarver https://www.instagram.com/p/CLkMi-9Lero/?igshid=1lm4gq48dqiuh
