Police in Nigeria say at least 67 people have died after three stampedes within days of each other. On Saturday, 32 people were killed, including at least four children, during Christmas charity events as crowds surged forward while food was being handed out. Of those killed, 22 died in the town of Okija, in the southeastern state of Anambra, after a philanthropist organised an event to distribute food, local police spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga said. Ten others died in the capital, Abuja, during a similar event organised by a local church.

Panic in Central Park: Noise at Global Citizen Festival Was Fallen Barrier, Not Gunshots

I’m still trying to wrap my head around this this morning and all I can think is I’m fucking furious at the way @glblctzn is downplaying the sheer hysteria that happened last night.

The four of us were sitting on the great lawn in between sets, waiting for Janet Jackson. The whole like 45 minutes was strange cause the audio kept going out and it was like everyone was wondering what was happening. Finally Hugh and Deb came out again but then it was like out of nowhere. I didn’t even hear the sound that set off the panic but then all of the sudden, a wave of people descended on us. I was underfoot of the crowd and it was like...the only way I can describe it was being in the ocean and a wave crashing over you and getting caught in crest and just being tossed around. If it hadn’t been for my friend Michelle screaming at people and grabbing my hand and yanking me up I don’t know what would have happened.

And then there was the terror of getting OUT once I got to my feet. There was the fact that we got separated from two of our friends. I was sobbing and all I remember is saying “what’s happening” over and over while keeping Michelle’s hand in a grip so tight my hand went numb. Cops were shouting at us to run, directing the way we should go. People climbing over barricades, knocking them over. It was chaos.

But not according to @glblctzn who are treating it like everyone was calm by the time they trotted out Chris Martin to say it was just a barrier that set of a panic. Not according to them, who had the show go on like at least half their audience wasn’t fucking traumatized NOR allowed back in after the scare because “no Re-entry”. What happened to us last night was very very real and the fact that it’s being swept under the rug is infuriating.
