WHY I LOVE ONLINE ARTISTS
It’s those songs that start blasting every time we turn on the radio. Those songs we can’t get out of our heads, and those songs we start shamefully singing before we realize what we’ve done. They’re fun, they’re catchy, and they’re slightly annoying—they’re the Billboard Top 40 (actually more like the top 5 to some radio stations). Here, we have Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, etc, AKA the artists on the mainstream side of the music spectrum.
On the other end, we have the YouTube artists. Don’t get me wrong—I love jamming to the upbeat top 40 as much as the next guy; however, there’s something about the raw talent on YouTube videos that keeps me constantly subscribing and coming back for more. There’s no million-dollar production, no fancy mics, no high-end sound system. It’s just the artist and the voice. It is almost as if I’m getting a private performance, where I’m able to appreciate the artist’s voice as it truly is. I love when I find a YouTuber who gives me chills with a totally stripped-down performance, or when I hear an amazingly unique rendition of a well-known song. YouTube gives people the freedom to be as creative as they want, allowing them to share their passion and musical gift with the world.
Another reason I love these online artists is they seem so personable. One day you’re obsessively gushing about how awesome and perfect they are, the next day you’re watching them talk about embarrassing moments and their favorite color. YouTubers are just like us. They go to school, they shop at CVS, and they film videos in their living room. Viewers can easily interact with their favorite YouTube artists and get to know them through their personal videos. For some reason I just love an artist even more once I learn they, too, enjoy eating cake pops.
If you’re in the mood for some great, immediate “live” music, you should definitely check out Clara C, Jess Delgado, Jayesslee, Ciara Catalla, Jennifer Chung, and Gabe Bondoc. They’re just some of my favorites among the hundreds of other talented YouTubers. Go listen to them; you won’t be disappointed (of course, these are my biased opinions but since I’m writing this post, it’s okay)!
