i am.. so incredibly fed up with the whole celebrity thing. i am so god damn tired of this weird culture of putting strangers on pedestals. i am so done with this fucked up phenomenon of masses of people idolizing someone and acting like they know them in real life.
of course i still like to consume content, and its not like i believe every famous person ever is complete evil. im just so sick and tired of how its somehow seen as normal and healthy to become obsessed with someone youve never met, only for it to come out suddenly that theyre a terrible person. and even worse is the people that keep supporting them regardless because what? its become acceptable to make a complete stranger a part of your identity?
god! at some point you have to realize you cant interact with a celebrity in the same way you can interact with fictional media! they are not art to be interpreted!
And this is exactly what the problem with stan culture is and I wish more people realized that instead of voluntarily staying in that toxic hivemind and echochamber they created for themselves. Stans will always say “x would never say y thing I know them they wouldn’t ever do that” No. That’s what those creators WANT you to see. Besides they’re not acting up to that character because of your entertainment values. They are acting like that because of how the general public is viewing them. Stans are a contributing factor to that because they’re loud and proud about their community, just like the minority groups that are being invalidated are. The general media will only listen to those loud and clear, the stans, because they’re the most visible ones in the community.. Sadly however, those are often also white cishet neurotypical teenagers. Impressionable teenagers. It’s very simple. The problem is that internet celebrities don’t realize they fall in the category of celebrities. It can be as innocent as Ariana Grande wearing a pair of earrings and suddenly all those types of earrings will be sold out at every jewelry store because those impressionable teens want to be like their idol. But it can also be as damaging and hurtful as someone like Jacksepticeye normalizing racism and transphobia and thus the people that look up to him will be normalizing that type of behaviour too. More people need to realize the damage stan culture can do because of a lack of exemplary representation from the creator or celebrity themselves. And because of that, the communities themselves become the representation of a celebrity instead of the other way around, like it should be. We can prevent this.
