Landmark Studio & Design Helps RAA Pioneer Standardized Recycling Labels
MUSKEGO, Wisconsin (October 12, 2012) – Recycle Across America (recycleacrossamerica.org) has partnered with Landmark Studio & Design to offer their standardized labeling system for use with their custom-manufactured recycling station units.
Ever since recycling became a part of the American routine, dozens of recycling labels have been created and inconsistently designed—with each being more ambiguous than the one before it. The general public has a vague sense to recycle all that they can, but do not necessarily know “what goes where.” Trash ends up getting mixed in with recyclables and potentially makes it unusable, essentially nullifying the entire purpose of recycling.
“More comprehensive recycling for the public at the bins means better capture rates and cleaner materials,” said RAA (via their website). “Cleaner materials mean less sorting by haulers, less disposal costs for the producer, less risk of contaminated output in production, and the U.S. will be more likely to use the recyclables versus sending our contaminated recyclables to China.”
By combining three essential indicators (color, text, and graphics), their standardized labels have virtually eliminated any guesswork involved in increasing recycling capture rates.
Recycle Across America also recently traveled to San Diego, CA to promote their labels on Good Morning San Diego, a local morning news show. Along with a generous donation from Kiehl's, Landmark Studio & Design donated the recycling bins to showcase the labels' effectiveness. Below are video and photos of the event.
Founded in 2002, Landmark Studio & Design is located in Muskego, Wisconsin, and designs and manufactures their made-to-order recycling stations using high-density polyethylene (HDPE, or “number-2” plastic from recycled milk jugs). By utilizing this material, Landmark has positioned themselves as one of the few pioneering businesses that saves tons of plastics from landfills every year.
