Star Spangled Spectacular!

Today is a very important day in the history of America, it is the 200th anniversary of the battle of baltimore and the writing of the Star Spangled Banner! 

It has come to my attention that many of you "americans" dont understand the importance of this majestic day, but have no fear i am here to educate you all.

Francis Scott Key is a great american hero who brought this nation together through his patriotic poetry. In good states who recognize his heroism, like Maryland, his name can be found on many things from baseball teams to shopping malls to remind each other of his greatness as he stood against England in the  great battle of baltimore.

The battle itself was an amazing feat, after all night bombs burst in air, and rockets with their red glare, in the morning the flag was still there! O how amazing it was, so amazing that frankly it should be celebrated every year! Now i do realize that is a big request, but on this day, the TWO HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY it should be celebrated across the nation!! 

Tonight there is a Spectactular going on in the Baltimore inner harbor, and it is just as in name implies. Fireworks, music, patriotism, everything that defines america! 

So followers, i ask you today to think about america and about its anthem you so love. Think about where it came from. About the man that started it all, a true American hero.

Rockets' Red Glare

The Battle of Baltimore, sometimes referred to as the Battle of Fort McHenry, was an engagement between American and British forces during the War of 1812.  The battle started on September 12, 1814 and lasted until the 15th.  American defenders in and around Baltimore, Maryland met and repulsed attempted invasions by both British land and sea forces.

The two sides first met at North Point.  Though the British forced the Americans to retreat from the field, the battle delayed the red coats long enough for the defenders at Fort McHenry to adequately prepare themselves to face the coming attack.

The British reached Fort McHenry on the 13th.  Their fleet of 19 warships, under the command of Admiral Alexander Cochrane, began to bombard the fort with mortars and Congreve rockets.  After a brief exchange of fire, British ships withdrew out of the range of the fort's cannon and continued to lob rockets and shells at her.  The bombardment lasted almost 27 hours and some 1500-1800 projectiles were launched at Fort McHenry. Damage done to the fort, however, was light thanks to the reinforcement of the defenses allowed because of the delay caused by the Battle of North Point.

Battle raged throughout the night as the British landed troops to break the American defenses.  When the morning came, however, Fort McHenry still stood and the defenders inside raised an oversized (30ft x 42ft) American flag as they did every morning for reveille.  It is this flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to pen the poem "Defense of Fort McHenry", whose fourth stanza would eventually become the national anthem of the United States.

The British, who had orders not to attack the fort unless they were sure there were less than 2000 soldiers inside, saw the flag and withdrew, heading for New Orleans instead.  Since then Baltimore has celebrated September 14 as Defender's Day.
