“We need to have a talk,” she announced, her posture far more relaxed than it should have been, as if all of her usual nervous energy had simply vanished.
Most of the family was unaware that Starla could, when she wanted to, completely detach from her emotions. Chance had caught onto it when she was younger, but mostly, she kept that well hidden. It wasn’t that she was concerned about what anyone might think, no, she simply didn’t like the way it felt.
But she had heard whispers that had been upsetting to say the least and if Valerian wanted to push at what she could do, he was certainly going to find out the hard way.

She had heard the words, but that didn’t mean she knew how to handle them. If it had been Seamas saying it, Starla would have believed it, but it was always so much harder to tell if Valerian was being sincere or not. “I...you...what?”

Her hands were still shaking by the time she actually got home and pushed the door open. Eli had promised to take care of Trace and she trusted him, but that didn’t make leaving him any easier. The blood stains beginning to set on her clothes didn’t help either and she just wanted to get cleaned up and try to salvage her outfit at the moment. It was a trivial thing to focus on, sure, but it was keeping her from crying when she kept seeing Trace bloody and needing medical help that badly.
Star made her way up the stairs quietly, trying to ignore her too pale reflection in the glass covering the photos that lined the stairway. She knew how bad she looked right now and she didn’t need the reminder. She also didn’t want to deal with anyone, but she knew that hope was out the window as soon as Levi rounded the corner.
