Never let resources go to waste. That was one of the foremost lessons Xigbar had learned over the many centuries, and, as he approached the dilapidated corpse of the first Constructor on Elpis (...yes, corpse, he considered the term subconsciously momentarily, before he felt it actually nestling properly in his conscious mind), Eridian interfacing software at his disposal, he quickly set to work.
Were his actions partially out of sympathy? Perhaps. In some situations, it had become so difficult to parse out what he did out of his logical cunning and what he did out of the remainder of his sentimental inklings. In some situations, the distressed cries of a fully sentient A.I. over hacked ECHOs of Vault Hunters were capable of prodding a part of his heart he’d thought hardened after so long. Some tone or phrase that nudged at the nerve of his own loneliness, which was not simply a memory, but a continuous reality, even when he forced it into mere background noise.
It still existed---still able to be touched.
But in the end, his more analytical half could still gestate reasons to engage in this distraction, as hands peeled back metallic armor with chipped red paint, getting down into the motherboards and wires beneath: for a human creation, this A.I. was incredibly advanced, the self-awareness aspect an undeniable bonus. The set-up would possibly be worth the study, and the time spent with this project was certainly of no consequence to him at this juncture.
And so, he circled back around to that first very thought:
Never let resources go to waste.
And once he had squirreled away the required data fragments for the task at hand and returned to his ship, meticulous fingers twisted at wires, pieced together the sleek holo-device, and, once properly satisfied, he switched her---yes, her, those green-tinted pixels forming from the lens and offering a shoulder-up headshot of a young blonde woman, an intellectual interpretation of herself---on.
Maybe his face would not be the most pleasant one to see upon her arrival back into the Land of the Living, nor would his voice be the friendliest, but they were the only ones he had on hand at the moment.
“Wakey, wakey, sleepy-head.”
