❛  as much as i enjoy your culinary talents, i wouldn't consider this my welcome home.  ❜ like his mother, david had mastered the art of grinning as he chewed on the weirdly textured food his father produced, and while he would have preferred to eat anything else, to know that his father had taken the time off his busy schedule to cook him a meal meant everything to him ( even if it didn't change the taste of the food ).

still, despite all of the love surrounding him at this moment, there was one thing still missing. ❛  until the drazi ambassador reminds me i was a very ugly baby, i won't believe i'm home.  ❜ he explained very seriously, taking another horrible bite.

“    would you rather i watch child’s cartoons like garibaldi?    ”    stephen spoke from the corner of his mouth, tone somehow holding affection and judgement for the station’s chief of security and his odd character quirks.    at least he knew how to relax, something that in all of his years of learning stephen never got the hang of it.    there were school tests  (   and ignoring his father’s absence in the dinner table   ),   medical exams   (    and his father’s letters about his future   ),    and then there was actually practicing medicine and realizing the knowledge on earth only scratched the surface of what there was to learn.     he never settled, he never felt settled, on earth, on the stars and even here on the station.

so he had started, at first, just exploring the station.    what he found there made his blood boil, but it also gave him a convenient excuse not to sit around in his quarters thinking about what he could do;   he found something he should be doing, and that was worth everything.   “    what?   running an illegal clinic under all yours noses is not a good way to spend my time?    ”

“     john,      ”     she protests firmly, denying him the smile which had almost tugged at the corner of her lip at his words, trying to keep herself on track.    this was not a desire based on a whim, they needed this.    the station had gone through unbearable grief, and she suspected that most hadn’t even begun dealing with the ramifications of everything they had gone through.   a rebirth ceremony would be the perfect to allow them to stop for a moment, not think about their duties and just be in the present for a few moments.

they were falling out of sync with the universe around them.      “     i assure you, the steps of the ritual i laid out are already a simplified version, as i believed the humans on this station would not be able to sit still for the entire expected duration,     ”      there is a narrowing of the eyes, the source of her suspicions standing very near,    “      it will gift us the strength we will need in the upcoming months.     ”
