The origin of Starless.
When I was REAL little, like in 3rd grade or something? I use to stay at my school way past when school was over, my mom, grandpa and grandma all worked so I had to wait in the after-school program or have a baby sitter, most the time I was in after school.
But the sun would go way down by the time I was picked up, and when I walked through the blacktop with who ever picked me up my shadow would be in front of me.
I use to jump up and down and try to make my shadow move independently from myself. I always thought it would be so cool if my shadow was someone else, someone like me but not me. I wanted to befriend my shadow. I had trouble making friends when I was little. Nobody really wanted to speak to me so I learnt to be by myself. Even today it’s so hard for me to make friends in person. So I made Jay the same way. She grew up like me, having no friends, being picked on, bullied. Un-happy. I use to pretend to have a friend a lot of the time, and I always turned to my shadow and pretended that it was my friend.
So back in Highschool when I first tried to think of a story I remembered my childhood and decided to make Jayde. Someone who grew up like me, but her shadow was someone else. He originally was suppose to be nice and happy and they basically protected the city. They saved people from their evil shadows, the shadows made them bad people so they killed the evil and replaced their shadow with another shadow, but what ever object they took the shadow from it would make the object disappear from life. If anything or anyone had no shadow they didn’t exist.
But I decided to change Shadow, I made him un-connected from Jayde, I made him evil but ‘good’, I changed Jayde’s name to Jay and her looks to look more like a girl,(I was tired of people mistaking her as a guy) I changed her skin color because I’m tired of having all white as shit characters. I changed the story to something that seemed innocent from the surface but once you change perspectives nothing was good about the situation Jay was in.
I changed the story because there needed to be conflict, and I didn’t want it to be /me/ I wanted it to be it’s own thing. And that’s basically it. I’ve been trying to figure out the details for 5 years now.
Starless was born.
