Elon Musk’s latest project, Starlink, as an internet service is regarded as the game-changer in satellite internet access. It is an initiative that allows broadband-like internet usage in remote areas through communications satellites. This, by launching a ‘constellation’ of small satellites into the lower orbit of the Earth.
The conventional broadbands are through DSL, cable or fibre whereas satellite internet accesses Earth-orbiting stations operated by ISPs. Starlink has an ambitious plan to launch 42,000 satellites in about 10 years out of which 955 have already been launched.
The project can cost the company anywhere between $30bn-$50bn per year, but it could also generate revenue 10x its rocket business. The FCC granted SpaceX federal subsidies worth $885.5m in December 2020. How such a massive initiative will earn steady revenues remains to be seen. Well, shoot for the moon they say.
