Toy Review: Star Burger (Shuriken Sentai Ninninger)
Is this the silliest Sentai toy of all time? Maybe not, but it has to be in the running. I love it.
So it's bold to look at, about softball sized when closed and done in colored plastics with almost no paint or stickers. The most obvious exception to that is the "phone screen" on the inside of the lid, which does remind me a bit of the toy phones we gave my son when he was teething.
But what's the alternative? A functional smartphone? This is a mass release and I can't even imagine a Memorial Edition doing much better.
There are only three sounds, all parts of a full transformation sequence: snapping the star in place on the shuriken core, pressing the red button once the shuriken is put in place, then spinning it to complete. Nice, clear sounds all.
Fun fact, the standby jingle that plays after hitting the button is based on the sound that the fry machine makes in a Japanese McDonald's.
All in all, it's a simple toy, with no sounds or functions other than transformation. But again, in the show, the other things it does are the work of a real life smartphone, so you can't expect selfies from a child's toy.
Kinji/Starninjer is one of my favorite 6th Rangers and this toy is very satisfying and physical. Moreover, it can be found for a great price for a 7 year old toy. If you like him or the show he's from, track one down.
