Mattel Starr doll, 1979
Finally took a Photo of All of my Jazzie Dolls (& her 2 sculpt Ancestors Kelley from Starr & Heart Family Mom). For those who don't know Jazzie was Barbie's Cool Cousin, the coolest girl in school, & released in the late 80s to compete with Hasbro's Maxie, whom Jazzie outlasted by a bit. Even when her line ended she got folded in to the main barbie line for a little while.
When I posted pics of my Mattel Starr doll in box last week I did mention I was going to try to find one unboxed and in need of some restoration. I actually found one for cheap on eBay, and after a little scrub and some shampoo and conditioner here is the result:
The doll even came with some of the original ‘Teen Items’ listed on the box, although no school books unfortunately:
First time I’ve gotten Tracy out of her original outfit (had her since 2007 and the doll came out in 1979). With that big grin, you know she gets to wear it.
Mattel’s Starr doll line only lasted a year but I can’t get over how right it got what was considered stylish for teens in 1979-1980. The rainbow suspenders on the roller boogie outfit. The casual outfit being a pair of denims and a simple fuchsia top. The curly pre-perm hairdos straight out of ‘Teen Magazine. The enthusiasm for the 1950s. Starr herself has a face mold that really looks like a popular girl who also is nice.
Dolls that got new bodies this morning.
Starr and Dawn have basically identical bodies, so Starr sacrificed hers to an extra Dawn head ages ago, but I did still like her. So now she’s on a Breyer body, which isn’t great, but it works.
Dawn is on a crappy dollar store body that happened to be roughly the right height.
Cringetober Day 12 is 'Niche Interest'
I struggled with this for some reason, but thanks to a friend suggestion, I went with Mattel's Jazzie and Kelley, who share on of my favorite face sculpts! I buy dolls with it all the time with every intent of customizing and then I just like them the way they are.
