I thought Roy got a happy ending though? I was expecting the worst for him, but he ended up healed and tasked to help with the reconstruction effort, which was what he wanted. Unless I'm remembering it wrong, it's been a while.

But anyway, yeah, Roy/Riza is an example of a platonic close friendship with optional romance handled well. There were no power issues because emotionally they were on the same level, and they both relied on the other equally. They had each other's back. Comrades in arms. One of my favorite kind of fictional relationship.
