Start and Stop

Hand-crafted bricks pile on his arms, his legs, his ribcage, his ankles when he hears her answer again. This time he's underwater. Concrete settles onto his breaking bones, his shrieking mind.

Fish emerge from seaweed and coral. They leave weaved plants of their interpretation of doom on the open parts of his body. Tiny pieces of mortar fall away.

She waits for his reply, but he is suffocating. Wisdom breaks the rule he placed at the start. His words come out in croaks. Odd but he suspects she turned him into a frog and didn’t tell him. Maybe she did.

It’s a joke, but laughing hurts; a struggle to breathe. It is a dissection. Pins keep him under long enough for his body to break into bits of sea formations. Slimy, he thinks. The way she says, goodbye.
