Shoutouts to Muddy Moges-Riedel, Ann Lynn Parker, Ashlea Hayes, DeJunae Ross and Rev John Parker for participating on the Black Deaf Cultural Capital Panel Discussion and sharing their experience! It was well received! WELL DONE!! 🙏🏽😍🙌🏽 In sociology, the term cultural capital refers to the social assets and expectation of a person, in other words, that individuals education, their intellect, style of speech, language, and dress. Those assets and expectations serve as a way of labeling people into socioeconomic strata, based upon their occupation and income, wealth and social status, or it can be derived from social and political power as a mechanism for promoting social mobility in a society. At the California Association of the Deaf (CAD) Conference, we chose to look at the notion of Black Deaf Cultural Capital. For the purpose of this discussion, we have put together a panel discussion that explores why African American/Black Deaf Students continue to be overlooked or erased in predominately White Deaf Spaces. #Education #futureofblackdeafchildren #changeyourmindset #changeyourattitude #startunpackingnow (at Hilton Sacramento Arden West)
