Went to the comic shop this morning
... and picked up the Young Avengers trade. There is no writing happening. READ ALL THE COMICS! I have to boggle at this; I haven't been this interested in or engaged by comics in more than 14 years. I'm not entirely sure why this one has gripped me so tightly.
The writing is great - it's written by someone who does a lot of writing for teen characters, and the rhythms of their language ring very true. Jim Cheung is absolutely amazing at drawing expressive characters and stunningly dynamic panels.
More than anything, though, I think it hits my 'origin story' kink full-force, more than anything - they're just starting out, only just learning about the scope of their abilities and their new world, and even small fry are a challenge - not like the old-school superteams with forty years of backstory (I gave up on XMen a loooong time ago) who need someone like Galactus to present any kind of real challenge.
