As owner of the simple and elegant, utilitarian-in-some-ways, profoundly charming disco room known as @starvue, Cecily created a home for a community of dancers that loved great music and enjoyed sweating to the classics in a dark room packed with smiling strangers. . . When I was first introduced to Cecily by close mutual friend @wonderwomanman (also an inimitably brilliant dancer and Starvue’s unspoken dance floor spirit), Cecily was a full-time nurse and landlord, running Starvue on Friday and Saturday nights, together with @ninieternalsol and @jmnyc212. Nini and Jon switched off working the door, while Cecily monitored the full space from near the booth, leaning on the wall between a garbage can and a dark curtain that blocked out harsh lighting from the hall. From her station, Cecily operated an industrial floor fan, which she used to keep the small room from combusting with sheer glee. About 15 minutes prior to closing, Cecily began circling the crowd, collecting garbage and mopping the floor. Periodically, some good-natured dancer would notice and offer to join the clean-up efforts, but Cecily would cleanly refuse and insist that the dancer soak up the last moments of dance floor bliss. . . New friends were made every night, on the floor, or outside on the street after the music had stopped. The sweat started to dry, and regardless of the weather, you always left Starvue with that same warm feeling. ❤️ . . Join us tonight at @nowadaysnyc. 8 PM - 2 AM, free all night, rain or shine.
