If you depend on fed $$$ for bike and ped projects, it's time to start making some noise
How much of a role does federal money play in getting local bicycle and pedestrians projects built? I'm not talking about new bridges or 25 mile rail trails. I'm taking about a safe, protected bikeway. I know in places like New York, Chicago and San Francisco the answer is not much. Most of the bike/ped projects in these cities are funded by the city budget, or in the case of San Francisco by bond measures and state taxes revenues that are dedicated to cleaning the air.
What about beyond the big cities? How much of a difference will MAP-21 and its "flexible funding" provision that allows State DOTs to flex up to 50% of their bike/ped funds and spend them on anything (read road projects) instead.
US DOT Secretary LaHood tells local bike/ped groups in these states to get busy agitating. Are we ready?
