Two good shops in Portland, Oregon
Floating World Comics, 400 NW Couch St, Portland, OR 97209
This is my go-to comics shop on the west side in Portland. It's kind of on the smaller side with a small staff to match. It seems like I always see the same three or four people working there, women and poc are included in their staff. I have noticed that women tend to make up at least half of their customer base, I don't think I've ever been the only lady in the room. Their stock is mostly newer stuff, plus a pretty good small press/zines/art books section. It's generally a quiet time when I'm in there, the employees don't bother me but neither to they ignore me. One time there were only two copies of the comic I wanted hiding somewhere in the store and the guy working helped me root around until we found it. They always offer to order something that they don't have in stock. It's just a nice, mellow place to buy comics.
Excalibur Books & Comics, 2444 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland, OR 97214
This is probably my favorite of the two shops I frequent in Portland. It has a more traditional comic shop vibe and it's huge. They have old issues and more obscure/cult stuff all laid out in a vast sea of well organized bins that takes up the whole middle of the store. Bookshelves full of trades and graphic novels make up the margin. Again, ladies and poc on staff make things feel inclusive. When I have to ask for something, they walk me over to where it is instead of just pointing even when it's obvious. They never make me feel stupid about not knowing how things are organized or not knowing what the current issue of a comic is if I'm behind. I've had a lot of good chats with the employees and gotten a few great recommendations from them, too.
