his moms had gone out to scour for supplies. they had promised to come back within a few hours, a day at the most. it was hard to track time without a clock, a computer or a phone, but he was sure that he had seen the sun setting over the lake a couple of times now, which meant that they had been gone much longer than promised. what was he supposed to do and for how long? what if they were hurt and waiting to be rescued? he had to find out. he left a note under the butterfly paperweight to let them know he would be back before dark. and so, backpack on, compass in hand, he stepped out of the cabin that had been his and his mom's shelter for weeks now. he had only walked for about a minute when he heard steps crunching over the moribund autumnal leaves, and they seemed to be rushing towards him. “mom? mama?”
