Items you sell: Custom Rubber Stamps, Printable and professionally printed stationery
What is your story, how'd you get started?
I got started by doing custom stationery orders and other graphic design projects for friends...Then I found Etsy. I opened a store and created a few cards that I just knew were going to be hot sellers...After getting them printed professionally, I listed them on Etsy and waited. Of course, they didn't fly off the shelves because I didn't know the first thing about how Etsy worked. So, I started trying some new things and I finally hit on custom rubber stamps. Now, more than 500 sales later, I think I found my niche!
What's your muse?
I get my mojo going by being in nature as well as being inspired by what others create. That might be by seeing a beautiful ad in a magazine, walking through an art museum or just by seeing a crazy branching pattern in a lovely old tree. I can never tell what will set my mind to whirling!
What are your favorite materials when creating?
I do most of my business designing on the 'puter, but my ultimate release lately has been on canvas. Painting on canvases is so fabulous; I love to see that white canvas morph into a swirling delight of colors and textures.
What are your goals?
I have so many; where do I start? A short term goal right now is to start offering hand-stamped journals. I am in the process of designing a rubber stamp out of a pencil drawing I created, and I have purchased some journals, so you should see some journals popping up in my shop very soon. I have other designs floating around in my head too, so I am not going to stop with the first one...
Also, I am really wanting to beef up my public relations. My goal is to get a really snazzy media kit put together, so I can get my work in front of magazines and blogs in a very professional manner.
Any advice to share?
My best piece of advice right now is to not be scared of paid advertising. I know that sounds like it is coming out of left field, but I think Etsians are too hesitant to really put their money behind their work. I see post after post on the Etsy forums about Etsians and advertising. I truly believe that you have to "put your money where your mouth is"; which I believe means that if you are passionate about your work, believe in it enough to advertise it.
