stauen (Verb) ~ to dam¹; (reflexive) to back up, to accumulate, to build up (also in terms of traffic; see der Stau)²
¹Die Mauer staut den Bach. “The wall dams the brook.”
²Die Tränen stauten sich, bis Erik die nicht mehr zurückhalten konnte. “The tears built up until Erik couldn’t hold them back anymore.”
