Aubrey tried to listen to the person she was shopping with, she honestly was, this was supposed to be fun but then the killer had to go and send her that threat. Normally, Aubrey wouldn’t give a fuck. She’d challenge the killer and smart off, but this was about Ethan. This was about her big brother and he had stood up for her on so many occasions. He had protected her and went to bat for her.
Her companion prattled on and Aubrey felt her world slipping from her. She knew she didn’t burn the diner down but she had already made comments about how much she hated working there, hollow comments as working there wasn’t that bad she just hated having to be nice to tourists, and about how she liked to set fire to things to feel joy. Aubrey looked at her phone to see if the killer texted her back yet before slipping it to vibrate and sliding it in her coat pocket. She looked at the other and then tried to tune back in but her mind kept going back to her phone. To Ethan. How did the killer get that picture? Ethan was so careful. He was so scared of being found out. This would kill him.
“Oh my god I get it! Okay I get it, your life sucks, well news flash buttercup life isn’t supposed to be awesome. It’s messy and dirty and chaotic and most of all it’s unfair and painful but that’s just how things are so will you shut up about your stupid life and let me breathe without your bitching buzzing in my ears?” Aubrey snapped turning to the other and then stopping in the middle of the street. She took a slow breath and ran her hands over her face. “I’m sorry, I’m just- I’m sorry that was too much.”
