Ruth Fertel
Ruth Fertel was born in 1927 in New Orleans, Louisiana. A divorced mother of two trying to earn more money to send her sons to school, Fertel mortgaged her home to buy Chris Steak House. Not only did she work as the restaurant's hostess, help the waitresses, and do the books, she would also saw 30-pound loins of beef into steaks by hand. When the original location was destroyed in a fire, she relocated the restaurant and changed the name to Ruth's Chris Steak House. The first franchise was opened in 1977, and Ruth's Chris now has more than 100 locations worldwide.
Ruth Fertel died in 2002 at the age of 75.
