Unlike Creata, this one does feature a live choir. The first one ever to appear on a Homestuck music track, to my knowledge. I didn’t think that the ‘Warhammer of Zillyhoo’ chant could become any more ecclesiastic, yet here we stand. Especially starting at 6:30, it's fantastic (the soprano really comes through).

Pseudumbra Fauxtasm (by Marcy Nabors & Jamie Paige Stanley)

Penumbra Phantasm isn’t on Homestuck Volume 10. But if you really, really want an idea of what it sounds like, there’s pieces of it scattered all over the place.

A few years back Toby played part of it, live, on a piano. This track, Pseudumbra Fauxtasm (alternate title: I Can’t Believe It’s Not Penumbra Phantasm), is a pretty faithful reworking of it. My favorite part’s the break right at 1:25. It’s a bit of the song that isn’t well represented in other mixes, and I love the energy of it.

I can’t help but imagine that the 12-minute playtime is a bit of an in-joke in itself: it takes a long time to build a house hundreds of miles high. There’s a musical segment for each of the seven gates, and my favorite’s the sixth (starts around 8:20), which has a sort of mellow pop quality to it.

Recently went through some Katatonia, found them to fill some of the holes. Also getting to know composers like Satie, Debussy, the full breadth of Stravinsky, and Reich surprisingly have given me some fun inspiration. I like the "impressionist" ideals, though some Reich sounds like the soundtrack to a GitS-like world (looking at Tehillim). Just wish some of the bands I like would keep pushing themselves or get out of trying to make the same album over and over with weaker results.

Love the combination of shabby Casio drumkit beat with ultra-realistic clarinet, xylophone, and accordion carrying the simple melody.
