director commentary on jackie and steve in cacw

Civil War was the film where I really wanted to dig in deep and let the character’s flaws come to life. I know that flaws lead to a lot of discourse but I actually enjoy the hell out of them. It makes the characters feel real and more than just a character on screen. Given when Civil War takes place, I knew that Jackie would already be a fairly vulnerable state at the beginning of the film. When taking into consideration everything that happens to her in that film, I knew that I had to take advantage and allow the readers to see her in a light they haven’t really seen yet. I wanted them to see Jackie being selfish and brash. I want them to see her completely breakdown and for her to act on those high emotions. I want the readers to be able to sympathize with her but also see her own faults in what ends up happening. Civil War really is Steve and Jackie’s first ultimate obstacle as a couple and I am not ashamed to say that they failed, miserably. But this failure allows for a whole new kind of growth for them as characters and as a couple. This film is their downfall but also their rise.

would definitely say that she’s useless in the mcu and think that putting her in the movies is just a waste of time and she doesn’t deserve to be there

consider her a weak character since she only had a few appearances in the first two iron man films so no one really got to see what she was like

pretty negative and underwhelming reactions when it’s announced that she’s going to be at the forefront in the avengers

even more criticism towards jackie when it’s hinted at in the film that her and steve will probably have some kind of romance down the line because steggy and stucky were really gaining steam at this point

people calling her a “horrible mother” because of how she dealt with her pregnancy in the early stages. it’s not pretty at all and it makes her appear as negligent to some people

the discourse starts to get really heated once it reaches civil war

jackie’s pregnancy, while most were surprised and like excited, others are like wtf why are they making her pregnant??? this is such a useless storyline and feel that it was tying steve down further with her

half of the fandom thinks that steve was absolutely right for choosing bucky for jackie because steve is better off with him and away from jackie. while the other half are like NO he was an asshole for choosing bucky over his pregnant girlfriend

OOOHHH MY GOSH. steve choosing bucky over a pregnant jackie is such a heated topic in the fandom. people would call it out of character and something that steve wouldn’t do, while others really like it because it makes sense because bucky means more to him. I imagine that chris can’t even decide whether it’s ooc or not for steve ajsdkl

steve stans would hate her for hurting him at the end of civil war and refusing to go on the run with him. tony stans would rip her apart for the things she said to tony and for how she treated him. yet both stans completely disregard how steve and tony were oblivious to what she needed and how much stress she was under and would say that she brought it all on herself

pre-iw to iw, the discourse would kind of wane a bit because that’s when jackie and steve kind of hit a new stride as a couple and their journey to healing actually gets some good reactions

but it picks back up during endgame when during the five year time jump, steve kind of starts to “neglect” his family while trying to search for a way to bring everyone back. and people are annoyed that they’re doing this with steve’s character again and people would complain that jackie whined too much and “needed to get off of steve’s back” when she’s trying to make sustain a fucking normal life for her, steve, and their kids.

can i get the commentary on steve and jackie's undercover tws kiss

This is kinda long and I feel like it doesn’t make any sense! IM SORRY

Gosh the pent up sexual tension would be absolutely palpable. This undercover kiss comes about a year (??) after an almost kiss between them that involves a semi-drunk Jackie. Steve, being the gentlemen that he is, gently dissuades Jackie from trying to kiss him because one, he wasn’t ready for that, and two, Jackie was drunk and she’s always been an affectionate drunk. Not that she goes around trying to kiss people, but add that to her growing attraction towards Steve at this point, my girl really tried her best. And it really confuses Steve, he knows that he isn’t ready for something like that. Yet, there is a part of him that aches for that kind of connection, that intimate contact. The only experience he really has is that brief kiss with Peggy. And that was during a rather dire mission during the war. But that moment with Jackie is calm, quiet, and peaceful. In the comfort of her apartment with nothing dangerous going on around them. There is a moment, as she’s trying to kiss him, where he thinks maybe, just maybe, he could allow himself that moment. But again, he’s a gentleman and didn’t want her to do anything that would possibly humiliate her.

Their reactions in the aftermath is awkward but kinda cute. Jackie remembers what happened and apologizes profusely for making him uncomfortable. Steve just kinda shakes it off and tell her that it’s okay, “nothing happened, so it’s fine.” And those words made them both feel disappointed because the two idiots want so badly to kiss each other, they just don’t realize it. Again, they are my lovable dumbasses.

With the mall kiss, Steve and Jackie have already started to question their feelings for each other. Steve is hesitant, rightfully so. It is expected of someone in his position to deny himself that kind of relationship. He’s scared of something terrible happening, that he might lose her. And also he’s scared of moving forward, scared to face his future. It’s an emotion that Steve experiences a lot in Renegades. His identity is very much tied to his past, he’s scared that by moving forward and letting the past go, he would lose a part of himself. But he starts to think that maybe being with Jackie would be worth it. And he does realize that it was all worth it because being with Jackie made him two things: a husband and a father. When they go on the run from SHIELD, they can really only trust each other at that point. They depend on each other for survival. The kiss happens in order to evade Rumlow and the other HYDRA members. While it’s a survival tactic, it is the moment where they each realize “wow, okay, I think I actually really like this person and I have no idea what to do”. Literally, they get so close to almost having a make-out session in the middle of the mall but Jackie breaks off the interaction so that they can leave.

It’s a moment that spawns a different form of trust between them, a more physical trust. After that kiss, they start to become a little more affectionate with each other. One the car ride to New Jersey, Steve comforts Jackie by taking a hold of her hand. It leads to another almost kiss at Sam’s residence that was actually started by Steve because my boy realized that he really really likes Jackie. This almost kiss is more physical, Jackie isn’t afraid to touch Steve (i.e. his face and arms, so on and so forth) Like talk about possible pent up sexual energy. But that moment is the hint they both needed, and they are able to put the pieces together. Like oh I’m into this person and they are also into me, cool! Because again they share a brain cell and it’s ridiculous but also adorable.

And then the kiss at the Triskelion. What I consider to be their first official kiss. By this time, the two of them have been through a lot. The organization that they’ve dedicated themselves to has been infiltrated by HYDRA, Jackie has to face the fact that her worst nightmare has returned and almost killed her… again. She feels as if her entire life is just falling apart right in front of her. But she knew that what she felt for Steve was real, and it kept her sane and focused. And they are both ready to take down SHIELD, they both know what that means and what’s at stake. Steve pulls her aside and tells her to that needs to be careful. There’s no way of knowing how many people are apart of HYDRA. He tells her that she needs to be safe but really he doesn’t want to lose her. Steve can’t imagine how he would cope if she didn’t come out of this alive. But he doesn’t know how to say it to her, he doesn’t want to cross any line. However, Jackie can get a sense on what he’s trying to say. She takes a chance and pulls him in for a kiss and he reciprocates quite easily.

I always felt that this kiss was their promise to each other. That they would find each other alive and well once all of this is over. Even though Jackie knows how Steve’s mind works. She knows there’s a possibility that Steve wouldn’t make it. If it came down to saving millions of lives versus himself, he would choose to save everyone. It’s grim but Jackie is also a realist. And if that possibility could come to light, she wanted him to know how much he means to her. That kiss was the start of their relationship but also a declaration in case something happened to either of them. And of course these dumbasses both get seriously injured, almost dying. But they are able to reunite after all the chaos that happens and like the massive relief they both feel when they see each other. God, they are so in love.

Renegades + Jackie & Steve’s Wedding Bands

"We can use these.” Jacqueline turned around with her palm open, presenting him two simple gold bands. “They’re my parent’s wedding rings.” 

Steve shook his head. He closed her hand, hoping that it was a spontaneous thought and not one she was actually considering. She placed her hand over his which prompted him to look up at her. She was actually serious. “No, Jacks, I can’t...I can’t wear your father’s wedding ring.” It didn’t belong to him. And he didn’t feel worthy of being in possession of such an item. He didn’t know John for as long as he had hoped to. By the time Steve had met him, the man’s memories had already faded too much. The name Steve Rogers no longer rang familiar to him. Every occasion that Steve would see John, the latter would often mistake him for one of Jacqueline’s old boyfriends or a high school friend. Never himself. But John wasn’t at fault for it. 

And she appreciated his hesitation. A small part of her did feel a bit odd for suggesting it. But her parent’s marriage, albeit it wasn’t perfect, she had never seen two people more in love. And what better way to honor them and their love, then to use these rings to solidify her own love. “They’re not here anymore,” she replied in a quiet tone. Her throat ached, the rings suddenly felt heavy in her hand. “I think they would rather we use these rings instead of letting them sit in a box.” She pulled her hand from his grasp and slipped her mother’s ring on her finger. She held her father’s ring between her thumb and index finger, then took hold of Steve’s hand. “Besides, I think my Dad would be very happy if you wore his ring.”
