amalgarn you do not even have to try to make something better than a minion. let’s talk about the three important things in that video that say good shit to a mere shitposter like me: 1) it’s a somewhat common theme: water monster/mermaid/siren archetype, water woman, which 2) you subverted both in that you made it cartoony and took the concept away from its somewhat easily-sexualized roots, but it still feels real because of emoting and shit and 3) you didn’t give it a placeholder personality like 99% of all cutesy monsters and/or sidekicks, you gave it a lil twist. it’s a tiny story, since it’s a one-man animation and all that. but within the confines of that story (which is amazingly executed by the way wtf i still find glee in pointing out to people that this is shit a first-semester animator can do), you made a wordless personality which is all its own.
and like, you might not think so but i do! i’ve always admired people who can convey personality through small things like nonverbal motions and tics. i find it hard to do. but whatever man.
if you had posted some of your random doodles from 3d concepts class i would have pointed at those (which are also simple, visually appealing/cutesy, and unusual) buuuuut either you didn’t or i couldn’t find them so.
