“My soul is full of longing for the secret of the sea, and the heart of the great ocean sends a thrilling pulse through me.” (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow) These words bring to mind Van Morrison’s lyrics: “Smell the sea and feel the sky/Let your soul and spirit fly/Into the mystic...” It sounds like both of these poets are describing a walk along the Steeplechase Pier, at Coney Island:) (Photo taken on December 31, 2016)

Atlantic City had numerous piers back in the day vying for visitors' money. Garden Pier, Million Dollar Pier, Steel Pier, Central Pier, and this one: Steeplechase Pier. For some reason I worked here when I was around 14; we would go stay with my friend's grandmother in Atlantic City on weekends and take the jitney. It was a world completely alien to us, and I have no idea why we did it, other than maybe to escape suburbia for some more seemingly dangerous adventures.
Like almost all piers in Atlantic City, it 'mysteriously' burned down in 1989. To the left you can see the Steel Pier.
