Eugene Chadbourne, 'The Competition of Misery' CD (Stella*Nera)

Glad to finally get around to checking out this Italian disc; I'd been aware of it since the early '00s, when it came into the record store I worked at as a consignment item from EC himself, an ex-Calgarian who made frequent return visits to the city and our store. I finally got my hands on it semi-recently as part of a mass intake of someone else's collection, and for whatever reason finally put it on today for a cursory listen. It seems to be a (beautifully packaged) collection of his song-based work, ranging from the mid '80s thru the late 90s, and it is very much in keeping with similar such things that I've heard from EC: an irreverent but rigourous approach to song, with a hugely various group of shifting bands, including here members of Sun City Girls, some usual suspects from the "downtown" NYC scene, and some people I'd never heard of before.
