Who Says Learning Can’t Be Fun?
May was a great month for the students of STEMulate® Change! With the summer quickly approaching, students at Silver Lake Elementary School were taught how to make S'mores using homemade solar cookers. The students made their own cookers with every day household items, such as: cereal boxes, aluminum foil, and plastic wrap. Through this exercise, they were able to learn about solar energy and the similarities/differences between convection and conduction heat transfer. Many of the youth loved the activity so much they went home and made their own cookers with their families so they could try cooking other food items. This knowledge will be something students can use on a nice summer day when they want a quick, fun, and educational snack! FAME can't wait to see what's in store during our summer session!
During this spring, several schools have completed their STEMulate® Change Outreach Initiative sessions by participating in Culmination Ceremonies designed to showcase student’s creative bridge designs! Students were able to learn about various bridge structures/designs and how engineers go about constructing bridges for safety, capacity, and style (Civil Engineering) through the STEMulate® Change ICON Archie Alexander. Mr. Alexander was an African American mathematician and engineer who was also the first person of color to graduate from the University of Iowa's College of Engineering. In the 1920s Archie formed the Alexander & Repass firm, which was responsible for the construction of many roads and bridges, including the Whitehurst Freeway, the Tidal Basin Bridge, and an extension to the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. FAME looks forward to SPRINGing into STEM and crossing the bridge into summer with more STEMulate® Change students!
