Steph had been trying to catch up to you for the last five minutes.
"Don't," you snapped, spinning around so fast he almost walked into you. "Don't call me that right now."
The hallway went quieter than usual. Students slowed as they walked by, pretending not to stare while very obviously staring.
Steph rubbed the back of his neck. "You're making this a bigger deal than it was."
"A bigger deal?" you repeated, your voice climbing. "You stood there laughing while your friends mocked kids who can't afford the same things we have!"
"With who?" you shot back. "Because the people you were making fun of definitely weren't laughing."
Steph noticed but didn't care. His entire focus stayed on you.
"No, you said, 'It wasn't that serious,'" you corrected. "That's not an apology."
"I didn't mean it like that."
"But you still said it." You folded your arms tighter. "You know what? I don't even recognize you right now."
"I've been trying to apologize all morning," he said quietly.
"And I've been avoiding you all morning."
"No hugs. No kisses. No talking." You glared at him. "Congratulations."
You immediately stepped back.
"You won't even look at me."
"I'm looking at you right now."
"Not like you usually do."
Your expression faltered for half a second before hardening again.
"You embarrassed people who didn't deserve it."
"You acted like being richer made you better."
"But you acted like it did!"
The hallway had practically become an audience now.
Neither of you cared anymore.
"You know why this makes me so mad?" you demanded. "Because you're supposed to be kinder than that."
"No, I don't think you do!"
The sudden raise in his voice made you blink.
"I messed up," he admitted. "I was trying to impress people, and it was stupid. It was cruel. I know that."
"But you're freezing me out," he continued. "You won't let me fix it."
"Because I don't know if I want to."
The words hung between you.
Steph sighed like he'd finally run out of patience.
"You've been yelling at me for ten minutes."
He closed the distance before you could finish.
One hand cupped your cheek.
The other rested lightly on your waist.
Long enough that your brain completely forgot the sentence you'd been about to throw at him.
A chorus of gasps and a few loud "OHHH!"s echoed through the hallway.
When he finally pulled away, your eyes were wide.
"You..." You blinked. "You kissed me."
"You weren't letting me get a word in."
"I was literally talking!"
You stared at him for another second before lightly smacking his shoulder.
"I'm not forgiving you because you kissed me."
"...You're still buying me lunch."
"And you're apologizing to those kids."
You searched his face, looking for any sign he wasn't serious.
"You really were an idiot."
"It's a hug. Don't make it weird."
Steph grinned and wrapped his arms around you, holding you close as the hallway erupted into teasing cheers.
"You guys are disgusting!" someone yelled.
"You owe me twenty bucks!" another voice shouted.
You buried your face against Steph's shoulder, mortified.
"I cannot believe everyone watched that."
He laughed softly into your hair.
"That's for kissing me without warning."
"...Would you be mad if I did it again?"
You looked up at him with the smallest smile finally breaking through.
He didn't need to be told twice.
