After 27 years, the citizens of Burkina Faso have had enough of their president

When Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore announced this week an initiative to extend his 27-year rule over the West African nation, his citizens decided they had had enough.

Tens of thousands of protesters poured into the streets of Burkina Faso’s capital of Ouagadougou to demand that Compaore stop tampering with the country’s constitution. Police used water cannons and fired tear gas to combat the mass demonstrations.

Donning several types of plastic bags over his head, and wearing a plain and simple western-styled button-up shirt against an even more plain white background, Angolan photographer Edson Chagas addresses mass-consumption, global consumerism and the promotion of self and individuality in a culture that emphasizes originality and non-conformity whilst mass production is at its height.

In Africa, in particular, these modern-day ills are further compounded by the influx of second-hand goods that saturate local markets throughout the continent, leaving with them traces of the origin.

BALI: Miss Philippines was crowned Miss World 2013  today in a glittering finale on the Indonesian resort island of Bali, with Miss France coming in second and Miss Ghana third.

The images of Belgium-based Kenyan-born photographer Brian Nyongesa are some of the most poignant, incredibly captivating and all-round beautiful photographs I’ve come across in a long time. Despite being documentary in nature, one doesn’t get the same outsider or ‘other’-ing feeling that is often produced in this line of work. It’s hard not to fall in love with every single one of his photographs.
