Illuminated manuscripts are a type of manuscripts where the text is complemented with many intricate drawings, ornaments and illustrations. With the invention of the printing press the production of illuminated manuscripts went out of everyday use because of the enormous amount of work and time they took to make. The pages above are from a sketchbook of a medieval monk Stephan Schriber. You can see him practicing the details of drawings that would have included birds, unearthly creatures and botanical motifs.

Selected pages from the Spätgotisches Musterbuch des Stephan Schriber (The Illuminated Sketchbook of Stephan Schriber), a manuscript which appears to be some kind of sketchbook, belonging to a 15th century monk working in South-West Germany, where ideas and layouts for illuminated manuscripts were tried out and skills developed.
