High school teacher Emmanuella Lambropoulos couldn’t hold back her surprise after beating former Quebec provincial cabinet minister Yolande James on Wednesday

A 26-year-old high school teacher virtually unknown to politics bested a former provincial cabinet minister Wednesday to win the Liberal party nomination for the April federal by-election in Montreal’s Saint-Laurent riding.

Emmanuella Lambropoulos and her team couldn’t hold back their surprise at beating the woman considered to be the Liberal party favourite, Yolande James.

“I’m really shocked,” Lambropoulos told reporters after her win. “I didn’t give up. Door to door. As soon as I knew I wanted this I worked really hard.”

Lambropoulos’ supporters credited the fact she lived in the Saint-Laurent borough and wasn’t parachuted in by the Liberal party as the main reason she came away with the victory.

“We came from the bottom up,” said Petro Vouloukos, 22, who helped Lambropoulos secure her win. “We were the grassroots. Not from the top up like Mrs. James.”

Montreal university professor says $15B contract should not proceed due to human rights violations

A federal court will rule today on the case of a Montreal law professor who challenged the federal government's decision to approve a $15-billion deal to sell armed military vehicles to Saudi Arabia.

Daniel Turp filed for a judicial review in Federal Court, arguing the sale should be blocked due to the country's human rights violations.

Turp, a former Bloc Québécois MP and Parti Québécois MNA, argued the federal government's decision to allow the export permits does not meet the legal requirements under the Export and Import Permits Act and the Geneva Conventions Act, according to a federal court summary of the case.

The deal with Saudi Arabia was struck by Stephen Harper's government, which highlighted the thousands of jobs it was expected to create and keep in southern Ontario.

But the sale by General Dynamics Land Systems has been controversial due to Saudi Arabia's human rights record.
