So, in words of many a confused Limey, “Wot’s all this then?”

I’ve compulsively written songs since I was about 16. As of this writing it’s been thirteen years, and despite being in several bands, these things have just started to pile up. It seems a shame not to share them with everyone, no?

My intent here is threefold, and  I hope to accomplish the following:

1. Make my work public so more people can hear it.

2. Interact with other songwriters/listeners/music fans in an effort to better explore and improve my craft.

3. Try and get to the root of why I do this, and maybe why other people do too!

Given that, I encourage feedback and interactivity. Feel free to respond to the songs however you see fit, and don’t be shy about hitting the “ask me anything!” button. For each song I will also try to go through the process of writing that I went through, and try to delve a little bit into how it came together.

“You’re Not Wrong (A Lotta Things)”

This one was written between 9am and 1pm last Saturday, April 18th. It started with a chord melody and then the repeated phrase “and you’re not wrong”. Early on in the process I didn’t really have a story in mind, I just wanted to follow where the words and song seemed to go. Once I’d settled on a chord sequence, the rest of the “story” tumbled out. I guess it could be described as a lighthearted ode to being nagged about things you already know about.

Clearly a little too different to be on the upcoming Sharp Shadows record, but worthy in its own sense. I feel like people kind of shit on light-hearted songs for whatever reason. I wonder why that is.

The demo was put together on my aging Macbook over the course of a few hours. As is my way with demos, I allowed for moments of spontaneity precedence over being letter perfect. For me it’s always made the process more human. I’m also really terrible with metronomes (more on that later).
