Stephen Kakfwi
I attended an evening at the Royal Canadian Geographical Society with Stephen Kakfwi, for his biography Stoneface: A Defiant Dene.
He is a past President of the Dene Nation and a past Premier of the Northwest Territories.
I was genuinely moved by his restrained but deeply-felt account of his time in the residential school system, his struggle for territorial democracy and Indigenous self-government, and his rise to the Premiership.
He has a gift for compressing profound feeling into few words.
