"No worries. That's what I do now. I'm Mr. Show's-Up."
Well, he fucking hated that he said that and thought it sounded anything but goofy, but he was rarely good in situations where he felt nervous and that was most of them these days when he was around Sterling.
The round trip to the counter to order and collect their drinks and his subsequent return took no longer than five minutes, placing her iced latte in front of her while he just stuck with a regular black coffee. No doubt it was going to make his heart race like he was on the verge of a cardiac episode, but that sensation felt oddly comforting to him, a reminder of days gone.
"Firstly, I owe you an apology." He tells her as he straightens up in his chair, though he knew that referring to that as a singular debt was almost laughable. He owed her at least a dozen, but he went with the latest of his infractions.
"I shouldn't have ambushed you like that at home when I got back. It was stupid and thoughtless and immature and a bunch of other things I'm trying actively not to be and I don't think I did a very good job of showing that that day by just landing on your doorstep. I don't really have a good excuse for it, I just wanted to see you."

Aurora Bay Drive hadn't changed much since he had last seen it -- still fenced off, still expansive, still unwelcome for someone like him. He hadn't forgotten his old tricks for gaining entry to the elusive living space, and with a slightly blurry picture of the screen of his work computer open on his phone, he checked, double checked and then triple checked that his feet were carrying him to the right place.
He should have called first. That much he's certain have. Lucky liked to think he would have if he still had a number for her that dialled, but truthfully he most likely would have agonised over calling several times and then just done what he was doing now.
It's an unfair thing to do, to crash land on the doorstep of someone who's life he had walked out on how he had, but if he didn't do it then he worried he may never do it and that felt worse than what was waiting for him on the other side of the door.
Allowing himself another twenty seconds for jitters and anxiety to rule him, he took a inhale and let out a sharp exhale before he knocked and took three steps back, hoping that the face that answered was the one he knew best from the Levin clan.

Watching Sunny and Kai from her beach towel, Lucy puts down her book as her cousin comes into her field of view. Lucy's sunburnt cheeks match the colour of her new one piece swimwear, she always forgot one spot of her body to cover with sunscreen. "I brought some fruit for the kids." She motions over to the knitted bag next to her, they looked so fresh on the street side market, "How're you going?"
💭 Sterling
"Sterling is like a big sister I never had. She's so pretty and just effortlessly cool, and I always amazed how she could just hold a room. Now she's got this beautiful baby, another on the man with her new beau. Some think I'd be jealous of her, but it's not like that. Sure, I compare myself to her at times, but not in a way that holds any malice. It's like... she;s a benchmark of the kind of person I want to be. Does that make sense?"

Who is one person that can always make them laugh?
"The easy answer would of been Sterling, but that was forever ago — she's not doing much laughing in my direction right now."

"is there at least gonna be a bounce house?" kai questioned about the birthday party for sterling's daughter. surprisingly enough, sterling and her daughter were people that kai felt a bond with. a real, human and genuine bond with. really, he couldn't say that about many people in his life. there always being some sort of chaos or alternative motive boiling underneath. nevertheless, sterling was like the sister kai never had. not that he ever really wanted a sister... he had enough issues enjoying the company of any of his family but what was that saying about found family? ... whatever it was... it was some heartwarming shit that kai wasn't usually prone to but here he was. "'cause if there's not gonna be a bounce house... i don't think i can come." of course, it was a lie. sarcasm clear in his voice. although, that didn't stop kai from going along with the words spewing out of his mouth. lips pressing together for a moment as he let out a dramatic sigh. "bro, i'm just trying to bounce, you know? besides, picture how much sunny would love it." this time he said the words with the raise of his eyebrows, feeling as though he was making a great point.

"Are we doing a theme?" Lucky asks, half scrolling through pins on Pinterest that he had marked for some inspiration. It was to be their child's fifth birthday but the first one he had an active hand in planning with Sterling, and he wanted that to go as smoothly as possible.
New Years Eve had been strange, mostly because of him and he hopes it was an isolated weirdness.
"If we are, I think it should be B-A-R-B-I-E," He spells out, knowing actually saying the word would have trigger their four (soon to be five) year old's interest like a summons and that would lead to her quizzing them on what her parents were talking about.
