DOES YOUR FAIRNESS CREAM HAVE STEROIDS ?
DOES YOUR FAIRNESS CREAM HAVE STEROID ?
Fairness is something that is desired by each and every individual. Irrespective of gender, social status, profession etc. The fascination for fairness has been well described in our ancient scriptures where Lord Krishna seems to puzzled while questioning his mother, 'Yashomati maiyya se bole Nand lala, Radha kyun gori, main kyun kala'. This happened much before the “whites”/Britishers invaded the Indian mainland. So much so that this fascination has taken gigantic proportions with the Indian cosmetic industry expanding at nearly 20% per year. But beneath these large and spectacular figures lies the malady of modern medical practice. The race to look good and fair has led to numerous skin related complications. Most important among them is the topical steroid abuse. This blog is dedicated to create awareness regarding the potential damages caused due to abuse of topical steroids.
Why steroids are used as fairness cream ?
Medical science has come a long way in treating various skin conditions. One such landmark contribution was made by Dr.Albert Montgomery Kligman, when he developed a steroid based concoction to treat various pigmented skin conditions. But little would he know that his invention would wreck such havoc in times to come. Steroids, which still are part of widely prescribed Kligman’s formula for pigmented conditions, act by inhibiting the pigment formation and thinning of the upper skin layers. Kilgmans formula has been modified several times and stronger steroids have been added which give faster results. But no one know the dangers while they use it. Not only this, the knowledge that steroid creams help in becoming fairer has led to a boom in the sales of steroids, which are sold mostly without the prescription of a qualified dermatologist.
Lack of information about the potential side effects of the topical steroids is one of the major causes of its abuse. Rampant over the counter sales to people who want to bypass the routine procedure of medical treatment. Uninformed or partially informed individuals passing on their advices to their near and dear ones to use certain steroid based fairness creams to gain instant results. Sometimes the lure of instant gratification can spell catastrophe.
What are the complications of steroid abuse ?
Topical steroids are intended to restrict the cellular activity hence providing relief in the respective conditions. That only explains that if its used in an unsupervised manner, it can lead to complications. Complications can be like thinning of skin, excessive unwanted hairgrowth, acne, visible blood vessels, sensitive skin, dry and irritable skin, excessive lightening of the skin, stretch marks etc. It also puts your skin at an higher risk of damage due to sunlight and pollution. Chances of infection become lot higher on a steroid abused skin.
How to correct the skin damaged due to topical steroids ?
First and foremost, visit your nearby dermatologist. Your skin needs urgent attention. This damage needs some expert handling and treatment. So don’t visit just another doctor in your neighborhood and rather look for a board certified or a well qualified MD/DVD – DVL degree holder dermatologist. The next most important thing to do is stop using topical steroid preparations. Start using some good moisturizing creams and also some skin repair creams as per the advice of the doctor. Also use a good sunscreen which some anti-pollution properties. Take plenty of fluids in your diet and increase the intake of vitamins to help repair your damaged skin. Let the doctor treat whatever complications that have arose due to the abuse of steroids.
How to prevent further damage in future ?
Always use creams or preparations on your face only after getting a proper advice from your dermatologist. Never use medications on face on the advice of people who are less likely to have knowledge about the problems of the skin. Regularly use a moisturizer on your skin.
